I want to share a story about my typical morning back when my babies were young while it is still fresh in my mind. I remember my son would wake up at 4 in the morning, every morning, like clockwork. I tried to feed him at the first sign of a stir so we wouldn't wake my husband up in the process. What good would that do? After a quick feed, I would pump my breastmilk to save for his later use. Sometimes I can catch a quick snooze before getting up again at 6 am to make his baby food. Oh was my boy a finicky eater! He refused anything ready made in a jar. He did not make life easy for me. I have to wonder how he could tell the difference at such an early age. I used to make chicken broth from chicken bones, then used it as a base to make rice porridge. I alternated through different vegetables everyday and pureed the combination into baby food. Of course anyone who cooks knows that the cleanup is the worst part. I managed all of this before getting everyone up and ready to leave the house. The drop-off was the worst. My baby would often cry, my heart would melt, and I couldn't help but cry with him. I soon learnt that it is best if I stick to a quick routine. Give him a kiss, hand him over, and make my exit without looking back. Babies often pick up clues from mothers, if you are upset, he would be too.
