last month. One of these high achievers, Lena Bucatariu, shared with us her best exam tips, what she thinks is important and can help you get a better result. Here is what she says:
“Dear Simone,
Every month, high achievers from around the world post on your blog excellent tips on how to tame the English language and improve the four skills. To avoid re-inventing the wheel, I have decided to focus on common sense advice on less ‘technical’, but still potentially dangerous details.
1. Sleep very well the night preceding the test; before going to bed, avoid watching TV, playing video games or doing other activities that may put undue strain on your eyes. And no alcohol!
2. On the day of the test, get up early enough – you want to make sure you are thoroughly awake by the time the test starts. Have a good breakfast, drink sufficient water, and don’t forget to use the restroom
3. When deciding what time to leave the house, take weather conditions and traffic into account; I suggest you have a friend or family member give you a ride, to avoid being pulled over for reckless IELTS-fever driving.
4. If possible, try to take the test at the same time with a friend or classmate; you can help each other out a lot by studying together, sharing materials and comparing teacher’s corrections on your homework.
5. During the last 20 minutes of waiting in the test room, anxiety may take over and fill your head with terrifying scenarios. You may feel scared, paralyzed, drawing a blank. This is the time to look around the room, make eye contact with your friend and smile. He or she probably needs this even more than you do.
6. While the recording is playing, look in your paper, and occasionally rest your eyes on the floor or anything inanimate. DON’T look at other people. Their reactions to the listening will distract you and, even worse, the proctors may suspect you are trying to cheat.
7. For the interview, dress professionally, but don’t overdo it; try to avoid new, very tight, or uncomfortable clothes or shoes. When giving your 2-minute answer, make sure you have an interesting story to tell, but don’t worry if the examiner seems a bit cold or unfriendly; they have instructions to stay neutral and keep facial expressions to a minimum.
IELTS test in Norway was shared by H, who remembered only the Writing and the Speaking topics – but hey, every little bit helps! Here is what they had:

Mehdi Nourbakhsh, 26 year-old student from Iran says:
“I got 6.5 in IELTS exam. My friends couldn’t believe.

Background
Mehdi Nourbakhsh is a 26 year-old student from Iran, who had to take IELTS to continue his studies at the UTM, Malaysia. He started to learn English in January 2009.
Six moths ago Mehdi didn’t speak one word of English. Here is what he remembers of his trip from Iran to Malaysia:
“I remember that when I was on the airplane, I couldn’t understand anything. I wanted to change my seat, but I couldn’t speak about that. I started English by this sentence:” I am Mehdi.”
You’re about to learn a true story of a person just like you, who went from no English at all to a Band score of 6.5 in IELTS (with Band 8 in Listening!), in just 5 months. He did it on his own – no courses, no teachers, the only resources he used were the library, where he borrowed books and the Internet.
Mehdi needed to get IELTS Band Score of 6.5 within 2 months of studying.
Strategy
Mehdi started learning English 5.5 months before his exam. He spent 3.5 months simply learning English and then another 2 months preparing for IELTS. During the last month of preparation he was using
5 months before IELTS – Listening to BBC (January 2009)
Mehdi began learning English by listening to “BBC Learning English”- but he did more than just listen. He downloaded the modules to his MP3 player and, as he listened, paused after every sentence and repeated it, trying to speak as they did. Mehdi practiced in listening every day.
Problem solved: pronunciation.
One of the problems that Mehdi had was the pronunciation. For example a word like “expression” he would pronounce “eks-pres-sai-on”, this is why he didn’t understand it, when he heard “expression” on BBC. Repeating after the recording helped Mehdi improve his pronunciation.
4 months before IELTS – Learning how to write an essay (February 2009)
Mehdi didn’t know anything about writing an essay. He started his preparation by reading Barron’s book on TOEFL essays. Reading wasn’t the only thing he did – Mehdi copied useful phrases from the sample essays, to remember and use in his own writing.
3 months before IELTS – Reading and Speaking are still a problem (March 2009)
We all have the least developed skill, for Mehdi it was the Speaking. He says that he tried to speak to his friends occasionally, but he was speaking so badly. Reading was his least favorite skill and he simply couldn’t force himself to read the texts.
2 month before IELTS – preparation begins (April 2009)
Two months before the IELTS exam, Mehdi and his wife started an intense preparation. They didn’t have the “
” book yet and were using many other books to learn how to write essays and reports, how to answer the questions in speaking, etc. They would spend whole days in the library, reading, writing, practicing.
Speaking:
They took turns asking each other questions, simulating an IELTS Speaking test. Each person had to answer questions for 30 minutes, and then they swapped over. It was a hard task, but they kept on doing it every day and after a month it became much, much easier.
Writing:
A very smart tactic Mehdi came up with for writing – he listened to Barak Obama’s speeches many times until he remembered them well. Repetition helped Mehdi memorize expressions, phrases and sentences of Barak Obama’s, when he spoke about society, bankruptcy, responsibility of the government, prosperity, etc. Later on Mehdi had no problem using these words, expressions and sentences in his writing.
Listening:
Following advice from AJ Hoge (EffortlessEnglish.com) Mehdi was “learning by ears” – he was repeating every lesson from BBC 10 times. He says that by doing so he picked up more words, phrases and sentences than he would ever pick up if he was listening just once or reading.
“. All the English he had was what he learned in the 4 previous months. He and his wife doubled their efforts, preparing for IELTS by this book.
Advantage 1:
Mehdi didn’t have to use many different books as “Target Band 7″ replaced them, thus speeding up his preparation.
How:
“Target Band 7″ covers all the skills, techniques and strategies needed for IELTS. Mehdi had everything he needed, summarized in just one book.
Advantage 2:
The preparation became structured.
How:
Using the study plan on page 77 Mehdi knew that in 21 days he will be as ready to sit IELTS as ever.

Mehdi developed all of his skills, not a single skill was forgotten.
How:
Study plan guides you through practicing in a way that directs your attention to tasks in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, to make sure you don’t focus on a specific skill at the expense of other ones.
Advantage 4:
Mehdi used his existing knowledge of English in the best possible way and got a score he really deserves.
How:
Mehdi implemented tips, techniques and the strategies in the book to show his English ability in the best light. Therefore he got a fair score, as opposed to many candidates who know English better, but fail to show it in the exam.

Mehdi learned that A) He needs to manage his time and B) How to do it, first in theory and then in practice.
How:
The book “Target Band 7″ explains that time is your worst enemy in IELTS and walks you step by step through the time-management techniques. The same techniques also help to stop panicking and get a complete control of your performance in IELTS exam.

Mehdi didn’t let stress ruin his performance during the exam.

TOEFL và IELTS vẫn là hai thước đo trình độ tiếng Anh chủ yếu để các nước tuyển chọn người đi học. Nhưng trường hợp nào thì nên luyện TOEFL, khi nào cần học IELTS?
Đối với người Việt Nam nói riêng và thí sinh các nước khác nói chung, TOEFL (Test Of English as Foreign Language) là hình thức thi quá quen thuộc. Những câu hỏi trong đề thi TOEFL thuộc dạng câu trắc nghiệm. Mỗi câu hỏi có 4 câu trả lời để lựa chọn, thí sinh phải chọn phương án đúng và điền vào phiếu trả lời. Mỗi buổi thi TOEFL kéo dài khoảng 3 tiếng. Bài thi gồm ba phần: Nghe (listening), văn phạm (structure and written expression), đọc (reading). Ngoài ra còn có phần viết bài luận (writing) còn được gọi là kỳ thi viết tiếng Anh (TWE) được tổ chức mỗi năm 5 lần. Tùy trường nộp đơn có yêu cầu phần thi này hay không mà thí sinh quyết định chọn một ngày thi có kèm kỳ thi viết. Chỉ có một chủ đề và mọi thí sinh đều viết bài luận về chủ đề này trong vòng 25 phút.
Với những sinh viên xin làm trợ giảng hoặc tham gia các chương trình, chứng chỉ đặc biệt còn phải thêm đợt kiểm tra khả năng nói tiếng Anh (Test of Spoken English). Phần lớn các trường đại học công nhận kết quả TOEFL của kỳ thi International (quốc tế) ở Việt Nam. Thế nhưng việc tham gia kỳ thi này không đơn giản.
Nếu không đăng ký qua mạng, trước hết thí sinh phải có cuốn Bullentin of Information for TOEFL and TSE. Hạn chót nộp đơn khoảng 6 tuần. Thông thường tại Việt Nam, thí sinh phải đăng ký dự thi ở các nước khác. Có nhiều trường hợp, thí sinh phải sang Thái Lan hoặc Malaysia để dự kỳ thi TOEFL quốc tế:
IELTS luôn có hai hình thức: phổ thông (cho thí sinh học bậc trung học) và hàn lâm (thí sinh tham gia các khóa đại học và sau đại học). Tất cả thí sinh đều thi chung phần nghe và nói. Ở phần nghe, thí sinh có 30 phút trả lời 40 câu hỏi chia làm bốn phần trên một phiếu tương tự như giấy nháp. 10 phút sau đó, thí sinh được phép chuyển những câu trả lời này sang phiếu trả lời chính thức. Thí sinh có khoảng 11 - 14 phút để thi nói trực tiếp với giám khảo và tất cả đều có ghi âm.
Phần đọc và viết có hai hình thức cho hai loại thí sinh. Có 40 câu hỏi trong bài đọc dựa trên những đoạn văn khoảng từ 2.000 đến 2.750 từ, thí sinh làm trong vòng 60 phút. Thí sinh phải hoàn thành hai bài thi viết trong 60 phút, bài đầu khoảng 150 từ, bài sau khoảng 250 từ.
Cả ba phần nghe, đọc, viết diễn ra trong một buổi thi; phần nói tổ chức trước hoặc sau ba phần thi trên trong vòng bảy ngày. Tại Việt Nam, thí sinh chỉ cần đến Hội đồng Anh ở Hà Nội hoặc TP Hồ Chí Minh hay tiếp xúc với IDP là có thể đăng ký dự thi được ngay. Mỗi tháng những nơi này tổ chức hai đợt thi, kết quả sẽ thông báo trong vòng một tuần sau khi thi.
