Namyang Milk Contains Harmful Germs

Last week’s discovery of harmful germs in Namyang Dairy Products’ baby formulas is panicking consumers, who are still recovering from the shock over metallic fragments found in imported dried milk.
The National Veterinary Research & Quarantine Service reported that it had found a strain of colon bacillus, Enterobacter sakazakii, in a baby formula product from Namyang Dairy Products.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the sakazakii bacillus can prove fatal for babies who become infected with it. WHO reported that worldwide, 15 out of 47 infected infants died.
A more serious worry is that the baby formula maker said it has been stricter in its own inspections since the bacillus was found in some formula imported from U.S. and British companies in 2004.
A Namyang official said they have failed to identify the contamination process, stressing that the company conducts detailed inspections from the original milk source to the finished goods.
Noting that the lethality of the bacillus is 20-40 percent, an official of the quarantine service said that heating the product to a temperature over 70 degrees Celsius would kill it off.
But most baby formula makers, including Namyang, indicate on their products’ labels to use water at about 40 to 50 degrees Celsius.
It is possible that consumers will file lawsuits against Namyang as they did earlier this year in the case of Enfamil, a U.S. infant formula brand of Mead Johnson & Company, which was found to be contaminated with metallic particles.
A consumer in Chonju, North Cholla Province, who requested anonymity, said her baby had been exposed to excessive amounts of metals, including cadmium and arsenic.
In February, when the government announced that impurities contained in some Enfamil products were metal, she took her baby to the Presbyterian Medical Center in Chonju City for a checkup that showed heavy metal in the baby’s hair.
Consumer Kang Ju-hwa said a bacteria count was relatively high in a medical examination of her Enfamil-fed baby.
``Mothers should take every possible measure so that the government acknowledges the baby food-related incident as really serious,’’ she said.
Last month, consumer Korea, a consumer advocacy group claimed that impurities were found in 10 of the 33 baby formula tins tested in a random sampling, citing data of the Korea Environment & Merchandise Testing Institute.
Similac, PediaSure, Ildong Foodis, Namyang Dairy and Maeil Dairy were among the 10 brands whose products were found with impurities, the consumer advocacy group claimed.
