1. Phân biệt Inspite of, despite

Cấu trúc: IN SPITE OF/ DESPITE + danh từ/cụm danh từ/danh động từ

 

Ví dụ:

Sau Inspite of, despite là danh từ

+ John’s company is doing extremely well despite the recession.

+ He got the job in spite of his prison record.

 

Sau Inspite of, despite là danh động từ

+ He was very fast in spite of being terribly overweight.

+ They arrived late despite leaving in plenty of time.

 

Lưu ý: Despite và in spite of hoàn toàn có thể thay thế cho nhau và IN SPITE OF được viết tách chứ không viết liền là INSPITE đây là một lỗi nhỏ mà chúng ta có thể mắc phải

2. phân biệt Although, though, even though

Despite và in spite of đã dõ, vậy còn "although" là gì? even though là gì?

Thực chất, although, though và even though có thể dùng để thay thế cho despite và in spite of nhưng về mặt cấu trúc ngữ pháp thì có khác biệt. Cách dùng của bộ đôi này như sau:

Cấu trúc: Although, though, even though + Mệnh đề

+ Though, even though được sự dụng một cách thông thường dân dã hơn so với although, although được sử dụng nhiều trong văn viết.

Ví dụ:

Everyone enjoyed the trip to the final although we lost the match

Though it was rainy, we put on our jackets and went for walk

 

+ Khi Though, although, even though đứng đầu câu thì kết thúc mệnh đề ta phải thêm dấu phẩy nếu ngược lại thì không cần giấu phẩy. Ví dụ:

Even though I earn a lot of money every month, I never seem to have any to spare!

I still feel hungry even though I had a big lunch.

 

Lưu ý: Trong một số trường hợp trang trọng chúng ta có thể sử dụng although và though + V-ing

Peter, although working harder this term, still needs to put more work into mathematics.

 

The patient, though getting stronger, is still not well enough to come off his medication.

+ Trong văn nói văn viết trang trọng chúng ta còn có thể sử dụng mệnh đề rút gọn với although và though để giới thiệu mệnh đề sau mà không cần động từ.

Raymond, although very interested, didn’t show any emotion when she invited him to go for a walk.

Though more expensive, the new car model is safer and more efficient.

 

+ Though còn mang nghĩa là tuy nhiên

Trong văn nói chúng ta sử dụng Though (không phải although, even though) với nghĩa là tuy nhiên, cách sử dụng này thường thấy trong giao tiếp hằng ngày giữa bạn bè.

A: You have six hours in the airport between flights!

B: I don’t mind, though. I have lots of work to do. I’ll just bring my laptop with me.

A: It’s expensive.

B: It’s nice, though.

A: Yeah, I think I’ll buy it.
